Detailed description of Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course

Pacific Grove Municipal Golf Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Pacific Grove, California.

Pacific Grove Golf Course offers views of the Pacific Ocean, Lovers Point, Point Pinos, Crespi Pond, and Asilomar's natural sand dunes.

The course first opened for play as a nine hole course in 1932. It was designed by Chandler Egan in 1932. The first nine holes takes you through the forested areas of Pacific Grove. Egan's nine takes you through an inland terrain and reflects much of the charm of an English rural course done in the old style.

The back nine was designed by Jack Neville, original designer of the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

The holes are unpretentious, reminiscent of an era when the 'par fours' were sometimes less than 300 yards and the 'par threes' could be contemplated by the common folk. There are not many bunkers, and the greens are small.

It was recently ranked by Zagat Survey as one of America's Best Golf Courses. The 18-hole golf course features a restaurant as well as a golf pro shop.

The front 9 is typical muni golf, rather boring and simple. The back 9 has views that rival some of the best courses on the monterey peninsula. Well worth playing if in the area. It was a very fun course to play and, if you play it after Pebble, Spyglass, Spanish Bay, or Poppy Hills it will boost your confidence in your game again.

I play this course once annually. The front and back nine are two different layouts. Watch out for the two deceptively challenging par 3's that start the front 9 and the very long one that finishes it. The course has well-earned the title of "Poor Man's Pebble Beach" with it's 11-17 holes all out over looking the ocean. Always a good time, no matter how you play!

This is an 'old golf course' - with a layout that is unique and interesting to play. The Back 9 has some spectacular views by the ocean. It was a cold and blustery day - so didn't enjoy the experience as much as we would have with good weather.

Beautiful setting- Monterey Bay, deer on the course, light house in the background. Our favorite course. Considering most in the area are 3x the price it's a great bargain. Fun holes for all skill levels. Front nine is very old school through forest, with shorter holes with small greens. Most approaches you can pitch and run. Back nine is newer links through sand dunes.

Front 9 a little above average with some short holes (with homes close by) which I am sure get backed up when really busy. But the back 9 makes it all worthwhile. Superb value and the staff is excellent. Holes 11 thru 17 (Poor Man's Pebble Beach) are just great with the ocean views everywhere! Can't wait to play it again. Easy to walk and the small greens make this course so challenging. I looked at the scorecard and thought ok, I can score here. Weather was warm and dry and the greens were very fast and made 3 footers very tough! This is a really fun and great golf course!

Back nine lives up to its "Poor man's Pebble Beach" claim; simply spectacular! Fairways are tight and a little confusing, but don't negate the awesome beauty of the area. Front nine just OK. 1st, 2nd, and 9th hole par 3s cause big back-ups, but remaining holes are OK. Overall: unbelievable value.

They call this the Poor Man's Pebble Beach and the back nine lives up to the expectation. The views were just short of spectacular. However, the layout was tight and somewhat confusing to the first time guest. A course layout on the scorecard would have been nice. The tight layout felt like squeezing a size 11 foot into a 9-1/2 shoe. That tightness led to way too many OB stakes inside the course boundaries. Other than those minor negatives, I would highly recommend this course to locals as well as visitors to the Monterey Peninsula. Playing Pebble, Spyglass, or Spanish Bay are real thrills (and you have to do them once), but Pacific Grove Muni will give a great experience at a bargain price.

This course has fallen apart. They had a major fertilizer burn on the front nine greens and they are unplayable. While those will heal, the fact is that this the front nine plays like a bad muni course. Having said that, the back nine is great fun. Great views. Holes 10 through 16 are lots of fun...birdie possibilites abound but they can also turn into bogeys or worse if you land in the dunes or the ice plant.

This course plays like two nines -- a boring front that winds through homes, but a BEAUTIFUL back nine -- Scottish links-style -- that takes you out to the Pacific Ocean (right to the point where the Mexican and Alaskan currents converge, creating amazing wave action). Prices are an absolute steal for Monterey golf as it's a local muni, which obviously causes them to cut back on the staff, as the people who work here are notoriously rude. On the wrong day, the weather can be downright nasty -- 40 MPH winds are not unheard of, especially during the spring and summer. Play this one in the fall and winter for the best conditions.

A schizophrenic course. The front 9 and back 9 are totally distinct and separate courses. The front plays through taller trees and houses, while the back 9 is entirely an ocean layout around dunes. This course will challenge you with all types of uphill, sidehill, downhill lies, tempt you to try and drive the shorter par 4 and require precise tee shots (especially on the back 9), and figuring out how to play in the wind. It's not uncommon to see whales in the Bay during the spring and fall months, which sometimes can slow up play on the back 9. Well worth the 140 drive in the summer to beat the heat. Front 9 greens presently are tore up due to chemical burns, but staff promises they will be back in shape around august 1st or so.
